Here is how you become a negotiations Detective!
Good Negotiators Don't Wing It—They Investigate First.
|
|
Hi there,
This July, we're inviting you to bring your inner detective to the negotiation table. Why? Because powerful negotiation doesn't start with talking—it starts with asking questions.
In Episode 4 of our podcast, we introduced The Detective Approach: a mindset and a method that helps you get under the surface of any negotiation. Instead of reacting emotionally or winging it, you investigate. You stay curious. You assess the situation, generate your options, and engage with intent.
And here's the truth: preparation isn't about rigid scripts—it's about building your own playbook. It helps you feel in control when everything else feels high stakes.
Whether you're negotiating for your time, your team, or your title — preparation puts you back in the driver's seat.

🔍 The Detective Approach: Your 3-Step Prep Framework
|
Here's how to move from uncertainty to clarity — before you even open your mouth.
|
1. Assess the Situation
What's your goal? Who are the stakeholders? What's the cost of saying yes?
|
|
2. Generate Options
Move from "This is the only way" to "What else could work?" Define your BATNA (Best Alternative), Reservation Point, and ZOPA
|
|
3. Engage Actively
Talk to people. Build alliances. Don't hide behind spreadsheets—negotiate out loud.
|
💡 Reminder: Great negotiators don't predict the future. They prepare for multiple outcomes.

From Me to You
I've spent 25 years in the high-stakes world of consulting—and I've learned that the best negotiators aren't the loudest or the toughest. They're the most curious.
Being a negotiation detective means you don't jump to conclusions. You explore. You research. You take time to think through what's possible. This mindset helped me leave a Big 4 firm on my terms—and build something I truly believe in.
Thank you for being part of this movement. Every story you share, every friend you refer, every conversation you start—you're helping us all negotiate better, together.
Until next time,
With clarity and courage,
Gitanjali
