Ending the Year Quietly, Clearly, and on Your Terms

The Power of the Pause

Hi there,

December has a way of revealing the truth: most negotiations are won not by talking faster, but by observing better. This month naturally forces a pause — a moment to step back, look at where your energy went, and decide how you want the new year to begin. No fireworks, no overpromising. Just clarity and direction.

⚡ Power Move of the Month

The Pause Before the Ask

If there is one negotiation skill worth carrying into 2026, it's the deliberate pause. A calm pause signals you are thinking, not reacting. It resets the tone, especially when someone pushes for a quick answer. It gives you time to check your values, your alternatives, and your intention.

Leaders use the pause deliberately. A three-second silence before responding to an objection or an unreasonable request is often enough to shift the dynamic. It is quiet confidence in action — and far more effective than rushing to fill the air.

"I need a moment to think about that; let me come back to you with a clear answer."

📚 Resource of the Month

WanderWomen Podcast — My turn as a guest speaker!

The episode of WanderWomen explores something that fits naturally with this month's theme: how clarity, self-awareness, and deliberate choices shape a woman's career far more than speed or intensity.

The discussion goes deeper into themes many of you have shared with me this year — ambition that sometimes feels heavy, identity that shifts as your career grows, and the steady work of asking for what you want without apology. What I appreciate most about this conversation is its honesty. There's no performance, just two women talking frankly about the inner work that makes the outer work possible.

It ties neatly to December's focus on the pause.

❌ Mistake to Avoid

Overcommitting in December

December brings pressure — deadlines, reviews, expectations, and the end-of-year guilt-yes. Many people say yes because they are tired, not because it is the right decision. The cost shows up in January.

If you feel yourself drifting into automatic agreement, pause. This isn't disengagement. It's strategy — and it protects your future workload and your credibility.

"I can't commit to this right now. Let me assess what's realistic."

The N Conference (October 2025)

In October, I spent a day at the N Conference, an event dedicated to disciplined, structured negotiation work. The day was a sharp reminder that effective negotiation isn't about looking impressive — it is about preparation, pattern recognition, and clear thinking under pressure.

My take is that the best negotiators behave like detectives. They observe contradictions. They listen for the unsaid.

Key takeaway: Real influence comes from understanding the deeper interests behind someone's behaviour, not the surface-level demands they present.

Once you understand what is truly motivating the person across the table, the conversation becomes easier, steadier, and far less emotional. It's a quiet form of power — and it works.

💭 Three Reflection Questions for December

? What did you stop tolerating this year?
? Which negotiation improved because you prepared carefully instead of pushing hard?
? What is one ask you need to make early in the new year — and what pause will help you make it clearly?

From Me to You

Thank you for being here this year — reading, reflecting, and doing the work with steadiness and intention. December is a good month to slow down, observe clearly, and prepare for what's coming next.

With clarity and courage,
